Warning: They’re Going to Fight for You

Searching for a better job?

In today’s employment market, talented professionals are tough to find. This means that it’s a great time to land a new position, but it also means that employers are going to fight for what’s theirs.

Warning: Your current employer may counter!

Smart managers are offering raises and promotions to keep their best and brightest from abandoning ship. So once you’ve received that great new job offer, you may still have one more hurdle to clear. Be ready for it! Think through your options carefully now, so you’re prepared for the counter.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • If you stay, will more money and/or responsibility be enough to make you happy?
  • Are you working in a dead-end job or a declining industry?
  • Will your relationship with your current boss be undermined, because they question your loyalty?
  • Could your current employer turn around and begin searching for your replacement the moment you accept their counter offer?
  • Is your long-term career potential greater with your current or new opportunity?

Make sure you know the real reasons you decided to pursue another opportunity in the first place. If you do decide to stay, will those reasons still exist? If so, it’s probably best to move on.

How to turn down a counter offer

When you’re ready to submit your two week’s notice, prepare to turn down a counter offer diplomatically and professionally:

  1. Pre-write a formal letter of resignation.
  2. Deliver it in person and explain to your boss the primary reasons you are leaving.
  3. Graciously decline the counter offer once it’s made. State that, while you are flattered, you’ve already carefully considered your options and are firm in your decision.
  4. Maintain your composure. Resist the urge to vent or argue.
  5. Explain that you will do what’s needed to ensure a smooth transition for your replacement.
  6. Be prepared for the consequences. Your employer may ask you to gather your belongings and leave. On the other hand, they may ask you to stay on for the standard two weeks and train your replacement. In either situation, conduct yourself professionally.
