Get Off to a Great Start with a Staffing Agency

You might choose to work with a staffing firm for a wide variety of reasons:

  • maintaining schedule flexibility;
  • earning extra cash;
  • gaining work experience;
  • preventing employment gaps while searching for a direct job;
  • trying out various job duties and work environments;
  • establishing new business connections and broadening your professional network;
  • getting a foot in the door with a target employer…

The list is long! But regardless of your reason, one thing is is certain:

You should do everything possible to get off to a great start.

So, whether you’re ready to embark on your first temporary assignment, or you’ve registered with a staffing agency to land a direct job, use these ground rules to establish a productive working relationship with your recruiter from day one:

Communicate regularly.

Not surprisingly, great communication is essential to a successful relationship with your staffing firm. Your recruiter will review standard procedures for notifying you about assignments, as well as how to check in. Follow their standard practices, and do your part to keep your staffing agency in the loop:

  • Debrief your recruiter after you complete a client interview.
  • Provide candid feedback about your assignments. Your staffing agency wants you to have a great experience working through them. They welcome your input about job duties, working conditions and what you like/dislike about each assignment – so they can do an even better job presenting new opportunities that are a great fit.
  • If you are conducting your own job search while working through a staffing or recruiting service, notify your primary contact if you receive an offer.

Be a consummate professional on client interviews.

If you are sent to interview with an employer, put your best foot forward. Discuss pay, benefits, time off and any other concerns you may have directly with your staffing recruiter – not during the client interview. Be honest, focus on your transferable skills, and never make disparaging comments about former employers or co-workers.

Share updates to your resume.

As you gain experience while on assignment, add those new skills, responsibilities and accomplishments to your resume. Keep your recruiter abreast of these changes, so they have accurate information that reflects everything you can do. You’ll be considered for a wider range of opportunities and ultimately increase your earning potential!
